Applied Design, Skills and Technology (ADST)

The ADST Department includes: Business Education, Home Economics, Information and Communications Technology, and Technology Education.

ADST 8 MADEM08, MADFS08, MADT-08, MADW-8

These courses will give students an introduction to three areas of Applied Skills: Business Education, Home Economics, and Technology Education.

In Business Education 8, students will learn: to become good digital citizens through appropriate technology use, to use different presentation software and to develop some understanding of marketing and business while preparing for and running their own mini business. Students will use a block-based visual programming language and website to create their own interactive story and mini-game.

In Foods 8 and Textiles 8, students will develop safe practices in the kitchen, prepare a simple variety of foods and meals, will learn the basics of sewing and fabric use, and will create a project using sewing machines.

In Maker 8, students will learn to use drafting programming to imagine and design a variety of projects. In Wood 8, students will learn safety and basic skills in woodworking as they work to complete their project.

Business & Computers 9 MADIT09

This course is an introduction to business and coding. Business topics include: marketing, entrepreneurship, hospitality and finance. Coding will use visual and/or text-based programming to create animations and games. A variety of computer programs will be used for hands-on problem solving activities and projects. You will also develop and/or improve your keyboarding speed and accuracy. If you have any questions, please ask a Business Education teacher or your counsellor.

Web Development 10 MWBDV10

This is an introductory course in web site design. You will learn how to:

  • Code and script using HTML and CSS
  • Publish web pages
  • Use Adobe Photoshop to create and edit images
  • Improve your keyboarding speed and accuracy
  • Understand how computer-based technology works

Open to all grade 10–12 students. Business and Computers 9 is recommended.

Computer Programing 11 MCMPR11

Enjoy coding and want to learn a text-based programming language? This course is an introduction to programming languages which may be taken by students who have no prior programming experience. Students should understand this course is a language-based course and requires very strong logical and mathematical reasoning skills. We cover data types, control structures, algorithm development, and program design with functions. Through games, activities, and projects, students will learn how to solve problems using a computer language. The examples and problems used in this course are drawn from diverse areas such as text processing to simple image and audio manipulation.

Open to all grade 10–12 students. Students should have keyboarding experience. It is recommended that students take Business and Computers 9 and Web Development 10. It is also recommended that students have a strong understanding of mathematical reasoning skills and concepts.

Accounting Level 1 MAC-11

Accounting is the “language of business” and every business needs accountants. This course is an introduction to how businesses process and maintain financial information based on accounting principles and ethical standards. You will learn through hands-on activities and projects. It is an excellent elective for anyone considering a career in business.

You will:

  • Learn how businesses keep track of money transactions
  • Use spreadsheets to organize finances
  • Understand basic accounting standards like debit and credit theory
  • Compete using Monopoly and accounting principles
  • Develop a foundation for post-secondary business, marketing and entrepreneurship courses

This course is open to all students in grades 10 – 12. It is a foundation course for Accounting Level 2. A grade 11 credit will be assigned upon successful completion of this course.

Marketing & Promotion 11 MMAP-11

This is a practical, activity-based course that provides a solid introduction to marketing and retailing concepts. Students design and sell Husky Wear as a class business and you will learn skills and knowledge that employers want. Topics include:

  • Retail marketing
  • Consumer research
  • Logo and product design
  • Developing and operating a retail business including: promotion and advertising, financial accounting, store design, and more.
  • Retail selling

Accounting Level 2 MACC-12

This course is a continuation of Accounting Level 1 with an emphasis on accounting for a merchandising business and developing the skills to make business decisions. This is an excellent course for those students considering owning or managing a business or who plan to study business, finance or commerce at post-secondary. A grade 12 credit will be assigned upon successful completion of this course. This is an ADST course.

You will:

  • Use accounting and spreadsheet software programs
  • Understand the concepts involved in accounting for a merchandising company
  • Analyze financial statements
  • Complete a personal income tax return
  • Learn about the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) program
  • Be ready to work at any company as a junior accountant

Business Computer Applications 12 MBCA-12

This project-based, hands-on course will give students the skills needed for success in senior courses and in life after high school.

You will:

  • Develop advanced business communication skills in various platforms
  • Use technology to support collaboration and interaction with others
  • Create and manipulate databases for budgeting and financial planning
  • Use graphic design to create professional looking documents
  • Explore issues in digital communication such as risks, ethics and legalities

Entrepreneurship 12 MENT-12

This course uses individual and team-oriented projects to help students develop their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. It is an excellent course for anyone intending to study business at the post-secondary level. Students will develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, while learning to work in a fast-paced professional setting. Through field experiences and real-world projects, students will be exposed to different types of innovative entrepreneurial concepts, such as design thinking, rapid prototyping, and team-building. Students will also be challenged to identify and develop their personal professional strengths along with their innovative spirits to create a profitable business.

ADST: Home Economics

Home Economics draws knowledge from many disciplines and uses the experiences and needs of students to make learning meaningful in both personal and family contexts. It focuses on helping students develop practical abilities related to foods, textiles and caregiving. It also fosters the critical thinking and problem solving skills needed to manage individual and family resources. We offer courses in the following: Food Studies, Family Relationships, Child Development and Caregiving, and Textile Studies. Our courses are current, relevant, practical, hands-on and interactive. Foods & Textiles 9 MADFS09FTX

This course builds on the introductory topics covered in Foods and Textiles 8. Basic practical skills are developed, enabling students to continue onto senior level courses with a strong foundation in these two areas.

Foods 9: Need a break from sitting at a desk all day? In this course you will be chopping, slicing, dicing, and planning your way to delicious snacks, meals, and desserts you can prepare and eat all in one block. Topics will include basic cooking and baking skills used to make recipes such as: muffins, cookies, cakes, yeast breads, pancakes, lasagna, pasta dishes, stir frys and rice bowls. Meal planning and creative lab assignments will allow you to select your own recipes to prepare and demonstrate the cooking and baking skills you have learned. You will explore foods both locally and from around the world.

Textile 9 topics will include basic sewing machine techniques to complete projects such as: Pajama pants, pull over hoodie or sweatshirt, bags made out of recycled fabrics and/or student designed fabric, and student selected projects.

NOTE: The Advanced Foods curriculum alternates over two years. Students may select this course in consecutive years without curriculum repetition.

This is a continuation of Food Studies 9 and Introductory Foods 10-12. This course moves beyond the basics of food preparation, with emphasis on gourmet and multi-cultural foods. Activities include creative labs and master chef type challenges. Learn to plan and prepare interesting, nutritious meals, snacks, pastry and yeast products. This class is open to all grade 10 -12 students who have completed Foods 9 or Introductory Foods 10-12. This is an ADST course. ADST: Home Economics – Textiles

Textiles 9 MADT-09, MTXT-10

This is an introductory course into the field of textiles. Suitable for students who may have little or no sewing skills beyond Textiles 8. Basic skills will be increased slowly through the introduction of simple projects. Students will also choose their own projects within certain guidelines based on individual skill levels and personal interest. Projects may include pajama pants and tops, pull over hoodie or sweatshirt. Other projects may include upcycling/recycling fabrics; computer designed patterns that will be printed on fabric and then used to create a pillow or bag. This is an ADST course. This course is for students who have taken Textiles 9 or Introductory Textiles 10-12. More advanced sewing skills and equipment will be introduced and applied to constructing both clothing and accessories. Projects may include: zippered sweatshirts (hooded or unhooded), robes, shorts, skirts or pants, shirts/blouses, dresses, creating your own printed fabric design and creating an item of clothing or accessory with it, upcycling or recycling items into something new, knitting, crochet, or weaving. Students will explore environmental, historical and social impacts on fashion/textile design and fashion marketing. Project choice will depend on your skill level, budget interest and time. ADST: Home Economics – Family Relationships, Child Development and Caregiving

Interpersonal & Family Relationships 11 MIAFR11

This course is designed to encourage self-reflection and critical thinking in all aspects of human relationships (family, friends, romantic partners, colleagues, etc.). Topics covered include: self-image and identity, love relationships and theories of attraction, parenting and child development, family dynamics, well-being and stress management, conflict and communication. Beyond the personal benefits you will gain, this is a beneficial course for those interested in careers in counseling, law enforcement, social work, teaching, youth worker and other helping professions. This class is open to all grade 10-12 students. A grade 11 credit will be assigned upon successful completion. This is an ADST course. Child Development and Caregiving 12 MCDAC12

This course is designed to encourage self-reflection and critical thinking in all aspects of human relationships across the life span from birth to death. Topics covered include: developmental theories, family dynamics, communication and emotions, relationships with yourself and others, romantic relationships, and parenting. This course will teach you how to navigate through the relationships in your life and is a great way to understand yourself and others. This course will prepare you for careers in counselling, law enforcement, social work, teaching, youth care and other helping professions. This class is open to all grade 10-12 students. ADST: Technology Education

ADST: Technology Education – Automotive Technology

Ever wonder what makes that automobile run, how the engine works, what parts are inside and what they do? Would you like to know how steering, braking, transmission, suspension, electrical, electronic, and other automotive systems are designed and how they operate? Learn about that car you will eventually own, whether for general interest or as a possible future career. Cars can be exciting and this can be your chance to learn all about them, not only in the classroom, but also in a well-equipped “hands-on” automotive shop. The Auto Tech courses at North Delta will help you achieve this knowledge, making you a wiser consumer, a more informed driver or possibly start you on an exciting career.

Metalwork 9/10 MADM-09, MTMET10

Students will be introduced to metal fabrication through the use of manual, air, and electric hand tools as well as machine operation. There will be specific instruction on safety, layout, cutting, filing, drilling, grinding and welding of metal. This class can be taken in grade 9 and 10. This is an ADST course. Automotive Technology 11 MTAUT11

This course will introduce students to the automotive service industry through a combination of classroom theory and practical work on operational vehicles. There will be a strong focus on safety and proper servicing techniques throughout. Topics included in the course are servicing and maintenance, wheels and tires, disc and drum brakes, ignition systems and cooling systems. This class is open to all grade 11-12 students. Automotive Technology 12 MTAUT12

This course will provide students and opportunity for further examination of automotive repair and service through a combination of classroom theory and practical work on operational vehicles. Topics included in this course are drivetrain, steering, suspension, electrical, fuel, and exhaust. This class is open to all grade 12 students, but prior course work in Auto Tech 11 is strongly recommended for success in this course. A grade 12 credit will be assigned upon successful completion. ADST: Technology Education – Woodwork

Introduction to Woodwork 9-12 MADW-09, MWWK-10, MWWK-11, MWWK-12

This is an introductory course open to all students. This “hands-on” course will focus on practical work in building a variety of interesting projects. Students will participate in the design of their projects and learn the safe use of basic hand tools and machines used in the woodworking industry to complete them. Advanced Woodwork 10-12 MWWK-10LV2, MWWK-11LV2, MWWK-12LV2

This course is open to all students who have completed the Introduction to Woodwork course. This “hands-on” course will look to improve the safe practical skills of the students, offer more challenging projects and increase student participation in the design process of the projects. ADST: Technology Education – Engineering

 

Introduction to Engineering 9-12 MADER09, MTDRF10, MEN-11, MEN-12

This is an introductory course that engages students in the design process using various technology in North Delta’s Maker Lab. Creative tinkerers and makers come together to dream, invent, build and share their ideas. Students will learn how to:

  • Build and program robots
  • Complete various engineering class challenges
  • Operate 3D printers, laser cutters and a vinyl cutter
  • Design and produce unique products for yourself and others

The design process will emphasize hands-on trial and error learning. Students are encouraged to discover and follow their passions, invent new creations and solve real world problems with innovative thinking. This course is a foundation for more advanced studies in design and manufacturing. This class is open to all grade 9-12 students. This is an ADST course. Engineering 11-12 MTDRF10LV2, MEN-11LV2, MENR-12LV2

This is an intermediate class for students who have already completed Introduction to Engineering (Maker Lab) in any grade level. Engineering 11 students will build and expand on what they learned in previous engineering courses. They will also be leaders in passing on skill sets to students in the Introductory to Engineering (Maker Lab) class. This in an ASDT course. Advanced Engineering 11-12 MTDRF10LV3, MEN-11LV3, MENR-12LV3

This is an advanced class for students in grade 11 or 12 who have completed two levels of Engineering (Maker Lab) classes. Students will be responsible for their own learning while engaging in an inquiry project of their own choosing that allows them to develop skills in one or more areas of study in engineering. This class is only open to students who have completed the Introduction to Engineering and Engineering courses. This is an ASDT course.
